Guidelines for setting AIS draught?
A question for mariners: What guidelines do you use for setting
draught for your AIS device and why? From my perspective, I would
expect the value to be changing with cargo and fuel such that draught
and position combined with bathymetry yields under-keel clearance.

Mostly I see pretty constant draught values for ships, but the
Nor`Easter caught my eye as having quite a few transitions of draught
during 2008.

AIS and draft settings.....

On the couple of ships where I've had occasion to ask about AIS configuration it was clear that the installer set them up and that was it. I can't say how typical this might be.

I've found that ships tend to update it on (just before) departure from a port, and also shortly before arrival (pilot boarding time). Often this is done as the chief mate comes on duty for arrival.

The numbers before arrival can be fairly rubbery, but are generally a best estimate from the chief mate based on fuel used etc. On the ships I've been on, they generally do not update the AIS draft immediately if they have adjusted their trim/drafts due to re-ballasting.

Just as a further follow up, In container ports (ie not ports where draft/tonnage is of great concern for payment purposes) I've found the drafts reported to ports to be fairly rough. At one port, draft surveys are not done before departure, so draft estimates come from the ships computer based on loading plans. This means there can be a large discrepancy due to over/under weight containers.

Often if you ask onboard, the draft reported to the port will be an early estimate of the loading plan. Depending on who sets the AIS, this is the most likely value to be used.

It's great to hear what people are encountering! I've definitely gone through the frustration of configuring the Class A Minimum Keyboard Displays. After using MKDs, I think the lack of display on Class B devices are a good thing. It forces vendors to provide some sort of real interface software. For us with the UNH vessels, it's been set and forget for our 7 AIS transceivers... not to convince someone to put one on the Gulf Challenger and the OAA vessels.

Then the key questions become are what should people be doing with draught and how should us researchers treat the draughts that are being reported?

To try to draw more people into the discussion, I've posted on the gCaptain forums:
